Readathon Summer Party 2023

We’re delighted to have put on the Readathon Summer Party for the second year in a row! Open to any schools that had taken part in Readathon this year, and also to our hospital partners, this fun-filled virtual event was a wonderful festival of stories!

At 10am on 22 June, around 90 schools and over 6,500 children joined our livestream to celebrate the schools we’ve worked with this year, their incredible reading for pleasure, and to inspire even more joy in reading.

Hosted by the brilliant M.G. Leonard (Twitchers and Adventures on Trains series), we:

  • Heard from the wonderful Skye McKenna and ventured into her fabulous novels Hedgewitch and Woodwitch.
  • Drew along with our amazing patron, Sarah McIntyre, to create our very own version of Pedro — from Sarah and Philip Reeve’s new series Adventuremice!
  • Listened to Matt Goodfellow read some of his poems… both funny and moving, we experienced how powerful poetry can be.
  • Explored Comics Laureate Stephen Holland’s comic and graphic novel recommendations — we were fascinated throughout!
  • Helped Read for Good storyteller Wilf with some imaginative ideas, which he then used to conjure a captivating story about ‘Pineapple the Pig’… named by one of the pupils watching.
  • Answered fascinating questions in our magical host, M. G. Leonard’s bookish and bird-themed quiz!

Alongside all of this, 10 schools also received a bundle of books donated by the event guests (worth around £650!) through our prize draw, to continue their love of reading at school!

We’re always bowled over by the amazing schools and students that part in our Readathons, fundraising incredible amounts to bring books and stories to children in hospitals across the UK. You can sign up for your 2023-2024 Readathon now!

Thank you to all our party guests — for helping us empower a generation of children to keep reading for joy! 📙 🌟
