‘The Gift That Keeps on Giving’

19th December 2023

This guest blog is from a hospital teacher Jess Smith and all the teaching staff at Gloucester Royal Hospital School Team. Jess shares with us how much the Read for Good hospital programme means to the children at Gloucester Royal Hospital.

On the children’s ward at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, the Read for Good bookcase never fails in bringing a smile to the faces of patients and their families. Part of our daily routine is to identify children who have not yet received the gift of a book, wheel the bookcase round and provide them with the opportunity to choose one to keep. Many people have heard of ‘Read for Good’ through schools, but not many have had the chance to see what the charity provides, in practice.

In the run up to Christmas, it is heartwarming to be able to offer children the gift of a story book, or a colouring activity book, recently kindly donated to us by Read for Good. It is even better when you return to check on the children and they are reading the books, sharing the stories or doing the activities with visitors they have.

The Read for Good bookcase really is the ‘gift that keeps on giving’…..giving smiles, giving focus and giving the opportunity to think about something else for a while.
