Read for Good’s Brilliant Box of Books – supporting school libraries
“I’m wondering what to read next…” Matilda
Children read more when they read what they like. This was the view of Readathon’s first chair, Roald Dahl, and one that is supported by decades of research and our experience of running Readathon over the last 35 years. Our new Brilliant Books initiative supports this.
Our charity’s mission is to support children to love reading, with all the lifelong benefits this brings from emotional wellbeing to social mobility and attainment. We know that now, more than ever, schools need an exciting range of books to help children discover the stories that will set their imaginations alight and fire-up a lifelong love of reading.
We’ve given £1 million of book vouchers to schools in partnership with Scholastic Book Clubs since 2010. We’re now piloting a new programme to further boost reading for pleasure book selection in schools. Filled with books that children love and choose, Read for Good’s Brilliant Box of Books is £1,000 mix of the latest series, graphic novels and firm favourites spanning Y5-Y8 (approx ages 9-12) and aimed at schools in need. We have 30 boxes to dispatch in our pilot.
We’re also including a year’s free membership to the School Library Association giving access to guidance and ideas such as lesson plans, expert book knowledge and reviews of digital platforms, plus exclusive benefits. Whether your school has a library or not, the SLA membership will help you make the most of your brilliant new books.
Applications close on December 31 2019, with boxes delivered in January 2020.
