Yours from the Tower
Sally Nicholls
Writing a novel in letter form is such a good way to tell a tale: it makes for a pacy read and its form reflects the era the book is set in.
It is 1896 and Tirzah, Sophia and Polly are best friends who have just left boarding school. Each is now living a very different life. Through the letters they send each other, they share their hopes, their frustrations and their dramas. Whether it be which of the rich young men Sophia is to marry, the boredom of being alone with her grandmother as Tirzah laments or what life is like working in an orphanage as Polly recounts. Reading Polly’s letters made me rethink what I imagined about orphanages in the late 19th century and this is for me the strength of this book: it is hugely entertaining but with a little dose of learning as well.
