The Pools
E. Lockhart
One morning, five people go for a swim in the pools of a New England town, known for its hot springs. Life for the residents is never the same again.
What begins as a traditional YA romance – new girl Lexie meets and falls in love with golden boy Chester, suddenly transforms into a totally unexpected story of magic, mythology and loss. I loved it and after my initial surprise I became fully immersed in the magic the story creates.
This is helped by the verse format which heightens the emotional power of the narrative. It’s a transformative story which could well help readers who are coming to terms with loss and grief of any sort as it offers a pathway through acceptance to hope and renewal. Definitely one for fans of Sarah Crossan or Elizabeth Acevedo.
