The Others

Sarah Merrett

A gripping historical sci-fi adventure based around a real-life event. Reuben lives inside a large house with his space obsessed grandmother. Due to an eye condition he is not allowed to mix with other people nor leave the grounds. Instead, he spends time in the observatory and climbs trees to see what life is like outside the walls. But one day grandmother goes missing and Reuben sets off in search of her, discovering instead an alien he names Blue. Together they fight back against the evil Professor Pinfield in a bid to reunite Blue with her people and find Grandma.

I love stories that use real events. The Guzman prize was offered in 1900 to anyone who succeeded in communicating with a celestial body and who received a response. This is at the core of this highly original book. There is a good balance of peril with the comfort of home and plenty to think about afterwards. The slightly eerie black and white illustrations contribute to the creation of a slightly spooky tale. It’s excellent!
