The Night Before Holi

Swapna Haddow, illustrated by Aditi Kakade Beaufrand

There is a riot of colour across every page in this lovely story about the festival of Holi. The text is written in the style of the Night before Christmas poem and whilst the rhyming doesn’t always quite fit ,children will enjoy the sound patterns as much as the glorious pictures.

The story focuses upon the preparations for the festival with food being made and the garden being decorated.
Ammamma enjoys teaming up with her Grandad to win the colour fight as they do every year before she and her friends rush through the streets to wish everyone a Happy Holi.

I liked the page of simple facts about the festival at the end of the book as well as the recipe for Mango Lassi.
This is one of a series of books which explain different festivals to young children. Recommended!
