The Island at the Edge of Night
Lucy Strange
A remote Scottish Island, a school for wicked children and all suffused with a strong theme of nature. I cannot recommend enough this book by Lucy Strange. It is beautifully written and gripped me from beginning to end.
Forest Faye, as her once renowned botanist father calls her, is sent to a new school on a remote island for a deed she has no memory of. As she gets to know the other children, Boudicca and Prince Filiberto, Faye realises that something is very wrong. But with no easy way off the island how can they leave?
For me this had all the elements of a great read. There were so many unexpected moments, the powerful descriptions of nature were mesmerising and for a classic adventure/mystery story there was an originality to this which was refreshing.
An ideal book for someone seeking a moment of sheer escapism.
