This story is about Avery Kylie Grambs, a high schooler from New Castle. Avery’s life, which is full of the absence of her parents and her financial struggles, takes an unexpected turn when she becomes a possible candidate of a billion-dollar fortune left by the Texas billionaire, Tobias Hawthorne.
Even though she never met Tobias Hawthorne, Avery is thrown into a world of wealth and mystery. The condition to claim her inheritance is to live for a year in the humongous Hawthorne House, alongside the unhappy Hawthorne family, including Tobias’s four grandsons – Nash, Grayson, Jameson, and Alexander (Xander).
The main part of the story is about Avery’s quest to figure out why Tobias chose her for his fortune. She dives into a set of clues left by Tobias, uncovering dark family secrets and tragedies, including the mysterious disappearance of Tobias’s son Toby in a fire two decades ago.
Avery’s journey is full of danger, as she faces hostility from the Hawthornes and external threats to her life, all set off from her unexpected inheritance. Romance joins with mystery as Avery finds herself drawn to two of the Hawthorne brothers, Grayson and Jameson, adding emotions into her dangerous adventure. The tension increases as Avery discovers she had a short encounter with Tobias as a child and that her chess partner, Harry, is actually the presumed-dead Toby, Tobias’s son.
I would give this book 5 stars because it has something in it for everyone. I would recommend it to anyone 12 or over because it’s a fun read especially for fans of Lauren Roberts, Holly Jackson and Stephanie Garber.
