The Glass Girl
Kathleen Glasgow
This book is very deep and has a lot of emotion in it. It will really pull at your heartstrings, and really makes you stop and think about the problems other people may be facing. 15-year-old Bella is at breaking point. Everyone in her life needs something from her, and there’s only one thing that dulls the pain. Alcohol, and that makes things so much easier. But one-night changes everything. When she awakes in hospital, it’s time to face reality. Bella begins to question her friendships after so-called friends leave her alone when she needs them the most. Bella ends up going to rehab, and the story talks about everything that happens after that. Unfortunately for Bella no matter how much she hates rehab and wants to escape rehab one stint isn’t enough for her. In rehab they talk about places and ways teens try to bring contraband into rehab facilities. Teens in rehab talk about ways in which drinking or taking drugs felt really good, and what they miss about it.
I would give this book 4 stars because at points it felt like the story relied on the topics of alcohol and drugs more than moving on with the story. This is a heartbreaking, emotional YA read. I feel the author has portrayed an honest and real depiction of addition and how people cope when they leave the safety of rehab. I would recommend it to anyone over the age of 14 due to such hard subjects being discussed.
