The Deep Dark
Molly Know Ostertag
…a hauntingly beautiful tale of identity, family, love, loss and magic.
I devoured this graphic novel by Molly Knox Ostertage in one sitting! The novel carefully weaves a tale of duty and sacrifice, and really smartly introduces the past into the narrative, with sparing uses of colour which make for a clever impact. This novel introduces the topic of secrets, and the toll it takes on you to keep them, and I really enjoyed seeing the main character Mag work through this topic and it made me think about the secrets people keep, and how this can affect personal relationships and family dynamics.
The art style in this novel really helped to tell the story, and I could very clearly see the world and how it operates outside of the main story! I’d love to see more from these characters or from this family, and it’s amazing when a book inspires you to want that.
