Tales of the Cobb Street Commandos
Tony Bradman, illustrated by Aleksei Bitskoff
A gang of London children during the blitz in 1941 work together to help the war effort. The story gives lots of historical background and deals with the feelings of the children and their families as they navigate the inevitable hardships that the war brings to them. The Cobb Street Commandos are a group of children who are determined and positive, working with their school, the army and even the Prime Minister to win their own battles in the East End of London.
The book deals with difficult subjects and themes in a direct but sensitive manner. Factual information is woven throughout, exploring key historic elements like rationing, the Blitz, family life, the Home Guard and information sharing. The characters are inquisitive, brave and spirited. Crucially, they overcome difficulties together. If I was learning about World War II for the first time, I think this book would help me to answer questions and ask some as well. Straightforward language and a hint of mischief carry you through at a pace.
The text is well spaced with a clear font, making it an accessible read. We think this series is ging to be a hit!
