Lisa Phipps

This is an inspirational debut novel-in-verse written by Lisa Fipps, which received the accolade of Printz Honor Book upon its release in 2022.

Ellie describes her experiences of being fat-shamed and bullied as a twelve-year-old girl in America. The verses are packed with emotion, and I cried along with her as we discovered that her biggest bully was actually the person who should have protected her the most.

With the help of a therapist and a new friend, Ellie shows us how to take a stand but, more importantly, how to love ourselves. This book explores difficult themes of family dynamics and bullying and is both heart-breaking and uplifting.

If you’ve ever been made to feel small, or know someone who has, I think you will find this book cathartic and powerful – I certainly did!
