Stand Up and Speak Out Against Racism
Yassmin Abdel-Magied, illustrated by Aleesha Nandhra
This is a thoughtfully written book which tackles a difficult topic and helps to give young people the tools to understand racism and to challenge it. Aleesha Nandhra’s illustrations and infographics alongside the author’s friendly tone help to make it clear and easy to access. I really liked the acknowledgement that the reader may feel many different emotions including shame, anger, frustration and guilt when reading the book and that those feelings are OK to feel. The book is divided into 3 main sections – how racism started, what it looks like today and how to stand up against racism. The author visited schools and asked young people what they wanted to know, their questions form the basis of the book.
From the history of racism to what racism looks like today, Stand Up and Speak Out Against Racism is great resource for KS2+ to promote discussion in school and at home.
