Sona Sharma, Wish Me Luck

Chitra Soundar, illustrated by Jen Khatun

This is a warm and charming tale of luck, traditions and how change isn’t always to be feared . The story is set in India and begins with a cast list of Sona’s family, a clever way to explain the Indian names used throughout the book. When Sona’s teacher tells her class that she is getting married, Sona is frightened that Miss Rao will move away. Together with her friends Joy and Renu, the girls look for lucky charms and traditions to keep their teacher with them forever.

There is so much to love in this tale. The blending of old traditions with current philosophies about change and resilience complement each other well and the description of the Indian wedding ceremony is enhanced by detailed illustrations.

Wish Me Luck is the fifth story in the Sona Sharma series. You’re Safe With Me (with illustrator Poonam Mistry) was shortlisted for the 2019 CILIP Kate Greenway Medal. For more further information, visit Chitra’s website https://www.chitrasoundar.com/
