The book offers guidance on how to write up experiments, how to work safely, how to record and evaluate results and draw conclusions. This is proper scientific practice but with a Big Manny twist. The experiments are simple and use ingredients that will be readily available in most homes. The instructions are easy to understand. Each experiment is marked with a level of difficulty.
There is a handy recap of the main points covered at the end of each chapter. Readers will enjoy the science quiz at the end of the book as well as a comprehensive glossary of scientific terms. It would have been useful to include an index.
Big Manny’s language is engaging and entertaining. He doesn’t shy away from complex scientific terms but his approach makes them highly accessible. His words are brought to life by Subi Bosa’s cartoon-like illustrations, especially the depiction of the key scientific elements as having their own characteristics and individual personalities.
A second title in the Science is Lit series, Awesome Electricity and Mad Magnets, is scheduled for publication in May 2025.
