Rainbow Magic: Li the Labrador Fairy
Daisy Meadows
I know that the Rainbow Magic series of books are popular with children who have just begun to read chapter books independently, and they usually read many of them. I haven’t chosen to read one myself, but when Tash at Read for Good left me a review copy I was secretly pleased. Lots of the children I work with in hospitals are very enthusiastic when these books appear on our trolley and my own nieces have been keen consumers. What is the secret?
I felt like I used to when I was a young girl reading the Ends Blyton books as I read this short tale. The story is simple, easily accessible and I had that sense of satisfaction from recognising how the story may go and then being right – even though I am 58 years old. I know that the formula may be easy to dismiss for adults, but children haven’t had our experience, so the simple pleasures of feeding puppies, turning into fairies, being powerful and successful and overcoming a just a little bit scary bit of naughtiness seem a good enough reason for children to enjoy this book.
If you want your children to enjoy the process of reading through a series of books then Rainbow Magic has a hook at the end of each story to make the next one seem very important – I have mixed feelings about this, and definitely wanted the entire story to finish in the one book, but if you can get hold of the books from a library, the issue of the cost of collecting the whole series to have the entire story does not apply.
This book is bit of fairy dust to help young people get hooked on reading.
