Princess Sophia Duleep Singh

Sufiya Ahmed

Part of the My Story collection, this is an exciting book based on real events. It is set at the start of the 20th century and is about the little-known Princess Sophia, daughter of the last Maharaja of the Sikh Empire and god-daughter of Queen Victoria. In a very accessible way for younger readers, it tells of Sophia’s decision to become a suffragette and her contribution to the early suffrage movement.  The book is written in the first person from Sophia’s point of view and cleverly interweaves historical facts about the relationship between India and the British Empire alongside key events of the suffrage movement. This is an excellent book to introduce readers to such an important moment in British history and crucially it casts a light on a previously unknown young Indian woman whose contribution to Britain has been hardly documented.
