Powerful

Lauren Roberts

Powerful by Lauren Roberts is a fantasy romance novella set in the world of Powerless. Powerful introduces us to Adena, best friend to Paedyn from Powerless. While Paedyn faces the brutal Purging Trials, Adena must navigate life alone in the dangerous streets of Loot. Roberts expertly weaves together Adena’s story with familiar events, offering readers a fresh perspective on the world they thought they knew. Adena is an intriguing protagonist, bringing warmth and light to the often-bleak setting. Her talent for sewing serves as both her livelihood and a metaphor for how she pieces together relationships and hope in a fractured world.

Lauren Roberts has made Adena into a character who is both relatable and inspiring, showcasing strength through kindness and creativity rather than brute force. Adena’s journey takes an unexpected turn when, after a failed attempt at stealing, she is rescued by a mysterious Elite named Mak, a brooding and secretive figure. Mak, unlike other Elites in Loot, seems different—his shadowy past and hidden powers set him apart, making him both dangerous and intriguing.

The pair find themselves drawn to each other in what quickly becomes a whirlwind romance. Mak’s gruff exterior contrasts with Adena’s bright, energetic nature, creating a classic grumpy and sunshine dynamic that fuels their attraction. While Adena and Mak’s romance grows, the story never moves away from the looming danger that surrounds them. Together, Adena and Mak join on a mission to see their loved ones before the Trials, a journey that tests their loyalty, love, and survival instincts.

Along the way, the novella explores how Adena’s optimistic personality contrasts with the bleak, ruthless world they inhabit. Her bubbly nature provides a refreshing contrast to the grim circumstances they face. Mak, on the other hand, struggles with his feelings for Adena, his rough act masking the vulnerability that comes from loving someone in a world that offers little hope.

The story builds to a heart-breaking conclusion, one that leaves both Adena and Mak shattered. The ending is emotionally wrecking especially as Adena faces a cruel fate. Their love story is ultimately a bittersweet one, leaving readers with a sense of unfulfilled promise. The final chapters are filled with moving and emotional moments, beautifully capturing the strength of their bond.

I would give this book 4 stars because I don’t think it lived up to the expectations of Powerless, even with the emotional scenes. I would recommend this book to anyone 12 plus due to the mild description of violence and mild bad language.
