This new addition to Walker Books’ series of abridged classics by well-known authors is not to be missed. The 19th century story of how Victor Frankenstein created a monster is well-known but the language can be difficult for young readers today. Here, award-winning author Lucy Strange perfectly recreates the tension and atmosphere of the 19th century but in a style that, while it is reminiscent of the original author, is more accessible to today’s readership. In particular, I loved the descriptions of the bleakness and desolation as the story moves across Europe. The desperation of the monster to be loved as Frankenstein himself seeks to destroy him would provide the basis for a great class discussion. I was hooked.
