Make Art With Nature
Pippa Pixley
- Packed with low-cost creative projects
- Uses materials found in nature
- Easy-to-follow instructions
For children who love art or the natural world – or maybe both! – this is a brilliant activity book and would make a great gift for any child who loves being creative with crafting. The highly visual pages are filled with easy-to-follow art projects that use materials found around the home or outdoors.
The book begins with some really helpful tips on topics such as mixing paint colours, drawing techniques and artists’ tools, and continues with creative projects using materials found in the kitchen, ranging from used teabags and red cabbage to honey and even spirulina powder! Later projects are based around materials found outdoors, in gardens, woods and beaches. Young artists can make ink from red onion or beetroot skins or craft their own paper from leek tops and old egg boxes, while the more adventurous can source flower petals, sticky clay and rocks from outdoor locations to make their own ink, paints and pastels.
The red warning squares are useful indicators of projects that require adult help but there are plenty of projects for children to do by themselves. The author also provides additional project tips throughout. The instructions are carefully explained and supported by both illustrations and photographs. Some children may find the pages too busy, and the handwriting font can make reading difficult for some. Make Art with Nature could provide oodles of inspiration during the school holidays, and the projects don’t rely on adults having to go out and buy expensive art materials. Overall this is a fun and inspiring book filled with original ideas and activities.
