Keep Dancing, Lizzie Chu
Maisie Chan
A warm and tender story about a young carer, big dreams and the pain of dementia.
Lizzie Chu lives with her grandad, a keen ballroom-dancing fan, but since the death of his wife he’s been acting strangely. Lizzie is worried but when she discovers that her grandma has left them tickets to the tea dance at the Tower Ballroom in Blackpool, Lizzie comes up with a plan.
This is a poignant read. It’s warm, funny in places and deeply sad in others. It exposes the life of a young carer with brutal honesty but also shows how kind and generous people can be. I liked how the Asian stereotypes are challenged as well as the sensitive way the difficult issues of coping were addressed. The book was shortlisted for the Blue Peter Book Awards and the Jhalak Prize 2022.
