India Incredible India
Jasbinder Bilan and Nina Chakrabarti
Shortlisted for The Week Junior Book Awards
This narrative, non-fiction book about India is an absolute delight. It informs and entertains simultaneously with a wealth of facts and the most beautiful illustrations by Nina Chakrabarti.
The concept of the book is that Thara’s nanijee has collected special objects from around India, keeping them in a wooden trunk. Each double-page spread takes an object from the trunk and explains or describes it within its regional context. It also includes colourful maps and drawings that are interwoven across the two pages allowing the reader to “dip in” if they prefer.
This would be a wonderful addition to a classroom shelf. It shines a light on the wonderful food, festivals, history, science and wildlife that India offers as well as offering lesser known facts. For example, did you know that dice were invented in India?
