I’m Going to Be a Princess

Stephanie Taylor, illustrated by Jade Orlando

When Maya’s mum asks her what she is going to be when she grows up, Maya tells her she is going to be a Princess. In an attempt to offer some alternatives, Maya’s mum tells her about inspirational Black women who have led their field – Doctor Alexa Canady, dancer Misty Copeland, Olympic athlete Alice Coachman, rocket scientist Annie Eastley but Maya is adamant she is going to be a princess. When Mum askes her what kind of princess she plans to be – it turns out she want to be like Princess Amina, the warrior princess who became ruler of the Zazzau kingdom!

A delightful picture book that introduces children to some key Black women that they might not have come across. Illustrations are bright and colourful and work well with the text giving the story warmth and humour. The back of the book contains a double page spread with a brief summary of each of the women mentioned in the story.
