I Survived the Battle of D-Day, 1944

(I survived series)

This American graphic novel is a part of a series that tells stories about young people and their resilience through unimaginable adversity. This title, published 80 years after the Battle of D-Day, uses different colours and pictures as well as a dialogue to create an informative and often heart-stopping tale. The story is fiction, but each character and situation has been based on true events. Paul’s life in his small French village has been turned upside down by the arrival of the Nazis and the subsequent fear and poverty that has come with that. When Paul finds an American paratrooper in a tree, he discovers his village has a secret resistance movement with plans to crush the Nazis. Ultimately the plan needs Paul’s involvement.

What follows is at times harrowing, but always informative and engaging. The graphic format works well here and will appeal to reluctant readers.

There is additional information about D-Day at the end of the book
