Happiness According to Humphrey

Betty G. Birney

This is a lovely, gentle story for younger readers which has an old-fashioned feel. It’s about a class hamster called Humphrey (I remember my primary school having a hamster called Scooby-do) who sits in his cage, watching and listening to the children as they share their highs and lows throughout the day.

This tale, the 13th in the series, focuses upon the importance of reading, a dog called Happy who the class can read to ( a great idea!) and a class search for another dog who has gone missing.

Although there are very few illustrations I did like “Humphrey’s Hints for a Happy Life”, which is a sentence presented in a box at the end of each chapter. I can see this being a very popular series to have in a school library.
