Fia and the Last Snow Deer
Eilish Fisher, illustrated by Dermot Flynn
This is a beautiful story written in verse.
I read it on a wintery day with a fire and dog for company, how lucky am I? A cold and wintery story but with the hope of Spring woven throughout.
Two children have heard a prophecy and set out on a journey of faith with a deer and wolf, to a place they don’t know across a frozen landscape, to find the Deer Mother and save a village from starvation.
The characters are strong and grow, change and reflect on their roles throughout. Their understanding of themselves reveals the essence of the tale. The animals and landscapes are central to the atmosphere. I really wanted to stroke the snow deer feed the wolf, huddled up beside a fallen tree. These elements are beautifully illustrated by Dermot Flynn who adds even greater depth to the magic of this story.
I read this book in a couple of hours and would happily recommend it to confident readers of eight or nine years upwards, but really, anyone who loves myths, nature, the supernatural and a hopeful story would enjoy this.
