Ella Jones vs the Sun Stealer

Lucy Edwards written in collaboration with Katy Birchall

Not only did I much enjoy this new book by Lucy Edwards, a broadcaster and disability activist, but I learnt so much about how it must feel to be blind. We love the the front cover which has the title embossed in Braille and the book is also available free of charge in Braille for members of the RNIB.

Ella has only recently lost her sight. She loves make-up and books and with the help of gadgets, apps and Maisie, her guide dog, is learning how to navigate her new world. She lives in central London with her parents and older sister Poppy and is looking forward to the school trip to the mythology museum with her friend, Finn.

What she is not expecting is how her blindness becomes her super power which enables her to save the world when a Celtic God returns and turns off all the light across the planet.

This needed to be written. There are very few books that combine realistic explanations of managing a disability with an engaging fantasy adventure all set in 21st century London. It works! I loved meeting Ella and would highly recommend this to a classroom bookshelf. Perfect for Skandar fans looking for their next read!
