Digging for Victory
Cathy Faulkner
One of my favourite reads so far this year! Written in verse, this debut middle grade novel tells of Bonnie, whose brother Ralph has gone off to join the RAF at the start of WW2 and who herself wants to be a hero. Instead, Bonnie is left to tend the vegetable patch and observe the mysterious Mr Fisher who is billeted to live with them.
This will make a wonderful addition to the many World War II stories written for this age-range. Its original take on a familiar plot involves Bonnie learning about physics and decoys. Verse novels can often be read more quickly than prose which should appeal to some reluctant readers. Like me, they might enjoy the different fonts and playful word shapes that are scattered throughout the book to reflect the narrator’s fluctuating thoughts. The build up to the ending is hugely satisfying. A book which will appeal to adults and children alike!
