Dance of Resistance

Catherine Johnson

Another winning combination between one of my favourite historical authors and the fantastic Barrington Stoke who publish books for dyslexic and reluctant readers.

Neatly wrapped up in just 109 pages it chronicles the lesser-known story of Josephine Baker, a poor black American girl who went on to become the darling of the stage, a member of the French Resistance, and an important civil rights activist. You can even find an image of her head on a 20 cent French coin

This is a story which will appeal to a wide range of readers:  Those who enjoy a rags to riches story, those who want to learn more about the war and those who want to learn more about racism and the American way of living in the mid twentieth century. I so appreciate the way in which these books are accessible without being patronising and at heart are great stories!

As ever with Barrington Stoke publications this has a hi- lo ratio between reading ability and age. This has an interest level for children of  9+ years with a reading age of 8 years.
