Cloud Babies

Eoin Colfer, illustrated by Chris Judge

This powerful, empathy-building picture book opens with a letter to the reader, acknowledging how difficult it can be to stay in hospital and also asking other children to be kind to those who have spent time in hospital. It is based on the real-life experience of illustrator Chris Judge.

This is the story of a family who love to see Cloud Babies, animals made from clouds as you look to the sky. Erin becomes very poorly and has to spend a long time in hospital, but she still has her cloud babies so she can be together with her family, even when they are apart.

When she is allowed home Erin is excited to see her friends at school again, but after her safe world in hospital, much has changed and Erin decides that cloud babies are for little children. She wants to be like her 6 year old school friends but she also loves being with her hospital friends who all play together. With support from her family and her teacher, Erin’s two worlds came together and cloud babies made everyone feel better.

‘Sometimes, when you’re down, all you need to do is look up.’

A comforting book for those facing illness and a support to those who are supporting anyone facing illness.
