Chronicles of Whetherwhy: The Age of Enchantment
Anna James
The story follows a young girl Juniper Quinn and her twin brother Rafferty Quinn as they take the test everyone in the magical land of Whetherwhy must take when they turn 13. They know that everyone who lives in Whetherwhy have some magic. Everyone is linked to one of the seasons with their magic but very rarely, a test-taker will reveal themselves as an enchanter. They are those with connections to all of the seasons, making their magic so much more powerful. When Juniper and Rafferty take the test, they discover Juniper is one of few enchanters and her brother Rafferty is not. This book follows Juniper when she goes to the school of enchanters, Thistledown, where she learns the art of enchantment whilst her twin brother is left behind. Rafferty has always wanted to travel and see more of their world, so decides he will seek a bookbinding apprenticeship away from home whilst Juniper learns enchantments. He finds a position in a city close to Juniper’s school. Rafferty settles in okay but is soon caught up in a secret society envious of enchanters and their bountiful magic. He begins to believe it too. Why shouldn’t those at Thistledown School share it? A showdown between enchanters and the society is unavoidable, but will both twins survive? As more enchantments go wrong Rafferty and Juniper reunite for reasons they never would’ve expected.
I would give the chronicles of Whetherwhy: The Age of Enchantment a 3.5 out of 5 stars. This is mainly because there was a lot of build-up compared to not a lot of climax / action until the very end. I loved reading the Pages and Co series when I was growing up and this is completely different whilst still following some of the same themes such as magic and a love of books, but also completely different in the storyline.
I would recommend this for anyone over the age of 9. This is a great book to read before the pages and co series because it is a bit easier to read with the choices of language Anna James uses.
