Chews Your Own Tasty Adventure

Dr Sai Pathmanathan, illustrated by Lucia Vinti

This fantastic book is a great ‘first’ cookbook for young readers. Chews Your Own Tasty Adventure is filled with sumptuous, fun illustrations, and a range of recipes for every appetite – savoury or sweet, new or familiar.

The ‘choose your own adventure’ style is a great way to build culinary skills for the young reader, moving from ingredients, to basics, to full blown recipes without ever feeling rushed (from melted butter that can make potato bread that can lead to rostis and latkes, for example). This style not only gives the reader agency in their choice of what to create, but also increases their confidence and exploration of how ingredients and flavours work together, and how recipes from different origins can be similar, based on shared culture attitudes to food and comfort.

Other highlights of this lovely cookbook include the comprehensive glossary, and the additional cultural history supplied with each recipe. These elevate the cookbook beyond mere recipes to create (although these recipes are excellent and thought-through) but make the cookbook into a haven for fact finders and food enthusiasts.

We thoroughly recommend this cookbook for young readers looking for their first foray into cooking, and the friendly, crayon-like illustrations make this an approachable, timeless favourite recipe book.
