Blue Penguin
Far away, in the south, a blue penguin is born. It is not something you see every day. “I feel like a penguin,” says Blue Penguin. “But you’re not like us,” the others tell him, and wander away. Blue Penguin can’t jump or dive or do the normal penguin things very well. In his loneliness, Blue Penguin begins to dream, and he starts to sing. How will he ever convince the other penguins that he is one of them?
A sensitively depicted story about the ups and downs of being different, and how it feels to not quite fit in. Horáček (described as ‘the thinking tot’s Eric Carle’) conjures an enchanting blue and green polar landscape, with splashes of white forming snowy mixed-media scenes. Blue Penguin’s tenacity is heart-warmingly admirable; never complaining about his situation. Instead, he finds his own path to happiness, proving that a positive attitude and embracing what makes us different can make life – and us – all the more interesting.
