Black Powder

Ally Sherrick

This is a perfect read for a dark November evening! From an award-winning author, this is an historical adventure which combines a plot full of treachery and daring with an enthralling explanation as to what lay behind the gunpowder plot of 1605.

Twelve year old Tom Garnett is in a race against time to save his father from the hangman’s noose – his crime being to help a Catholic priest flee Lord Cecil’s men. Tom is befriended by a man known only as the Falcon who promises to help him free his father in exchange from some service. As Tom learns more about his own background and what is at stake he begins to wonder who he should trust at all. Meanwhile time is running out for his father…

I loved this. It’s such a good introduction to historical novels and there are a lot of authentic people and places mentioned with further information at the back of the book. A great addition to a classroom bookshelf!
