Bear is ready for a peaceful nap in his cosy cave, but a persistent “cheep cheep” is keeping him awake. Frustrated, he sets out into the forest to find the culprit. Along the way, he encounters a variety of animals and their noisy calls, creating an increasingly chaotic cacophony, but none of them “cheep.” Who could it possibly be?
This book is full of wonderful humour and rhythm, complemented by Gravett’s distinctive pencil and watercolour illustrations, which are brimming with warmth and character. Adults will relate to Bear’s sleep frustration, while children will enjoy the cumulative pacing, the chance to join in with the animal sounds, and the playful guessing game as the story unfolds.
Children will love guessing who is making the sound, and joining in with the familiar animal noises. While it could make for a noisy and playful read, the story ends on a gentle, calming note – perfect for bedtime.
