Taking a look at Book Awards can be a shortcut to finding great books for the young people in your life (and maybe you too!). There are lots of Book Awards around, and here we focus on a few of our favourites!

Scholastic Graphic Novels Award 2024

One of 2 book prizes purely for graphic novels, this award recognises the brilliance of the Graphic Novel – telling funny, complicated, engaging stories with minimal words and expressive pictures. Graphic Novels work really hard to tell a story – meaning that you don’t have to!

The Excelsior Award

The Excelsior Awards are a nationwide award for graphic novels & manga, young people aged 9-18 decide the winner (via four age-appropriate categories) by rating each book as they read it! The overall goal of this scheme is to encourage reading for pleasure amongst children and teenagers. However, its secondary target is to raise the profile of graphic novels and manga amongst school librarians and teachers.

An award where children decide the winners!!

From August to October, we invite publishers to submit books that fit our criteria, before our panels of teachers, librarians and other educationalists narrow these submissions down to our shortlists. Once these are announced in early January, it’s over to schools and children to read, react and vote on the winners of the Spark! Book Awards.
